Stripes are the simplest pattern there is, and one of the most useful. They can make a ceiling look higher, a narrow room look wider, and a busy room feel more ordered. The width of the stripe and the contrast between the colours decide how strong the effect is.

Some designs can be hung horizontally to make a narrow room or a short wall feel wider. Check the product description before you plan it, and remember that horizontal hanging changes how many rolls you need.

Wide stripes or narrow stripes?

Wide stripes are bold and modern, and look best on a large wall. Narrow and ticking stripes are quieter and more traditional, and suit bedrooms, kitchens and smaller rooms. Low-contrast stripes, such as two tones of the same colour, read almost as a texture.

Neutral and blue striped wallpaper

Neutral and cream stripes are the easiest to decorate around and suit almost any room. Blue striped wallpaper feels fresh and calm, which makes it popular in bedrooms and bathrooms; green and sage stripes bring a softer, country look.

A soft stripe on all four walls makes a bedroom feel calm and orderly. A bolder stripe behind the bed works as a headboard wall.

Hanging striped wallpaper

Walls and corners are rarely perfectly straight, and stripes show it more than any other pattern. Use a plumb line or a spirit level for the first drop on each wall, and start in the least noticeable corner.
