Art & Paintings — Canvas, Framed & 3D Wall Art

A picture finishes a room in a way furniture can't. It gives a wall a focal point, ties together the colours of the sofa, the rug and the cushions, and says something about who lives there.

Hang it above a sofa, a sideboard or a console table, and see also mirrors, wall lights and decorative accessories. To change the whole wall, see wallpaper and paint.

Types of wall art

Hand-painted canvas art

Many of the canvases here are abstract and botanical pieces from Scatterbox, which describes many of them as hand-painted, often in a floating wooden or gold frame. A few come as a set of two.

Framed prints and paintings

Framed prints and framed oil paintings cover landscapes, seascapes, city scenes and figurative pieces, along with glass images in gold frames and art in mirrored frames.

3D and metal wall art

Several pieces combine metal and wood in raised layers for a 3D effect, many at 80x80cm. Iron wall panels and wall decorations add metallic texture without a frame.

Pictures for the living room

Over a sofa, one large piece or a pair usually looks better than several small ones. As a rule of thumb, the art should be around two-thirds the width of the sofa. Pick up one or two colours from the cushions or the rug and the room will feel planned.

How high to hang a picture

On an open wall, hang it so the centre of the picture is about 145–150cm from the floor, roughly eye level. Over a sofa or sideboard, leave a gap of about 20–25cm between the furniture and the bottom of the frame so they read as one group. Hang a set of two with a small, equal gap between them.

Fixings

Use fixings that suit both the weight of the piece and the wall: plasterboard and masonry need different plugs. For a large or heavy piece, two fixings keep it level.
