A standard bed is a frame and a slatted base, and nothing else. No lifting mechanism, no second bunk above, no folding action — just the bed. It is what most people picture when they think of a bed, and it is the largest part of the range by a distance.
What makes a bed frame standard
The distinction is mechanical rather than visual. Everything else in this part of the range does a second job: an ottoman bed lifts its base to store things underneath, a bunk bed stacks two sleeping places into one footprint, and a sofa bed converts into seating. A standard bed does one job and does it without moving parts.
That has two consequences worth knowing. There is nothing to wear out — no struts to lose their lift, no mechanism to service — so the life of the bed is the life of the frame. And it is usually the slimmest option in external width for a given mattress size, because there is no lifting hardware or padded surround to accommodate, which matters in a room where the bed only just fits.
What you give up is the storage. If the room needs the space under the bed, that is the argument for an ottoman bed instead.

Standard beds by material
After size, the frame material is what changes the bed most. Timber is quieter under two people, slimmer in external width and more forgiving of knocks along the sides. Upholstered frames are softer where you sit up against them, come with the headboard already part of the bed, and add a few inches of width.

What is a standard bed?

Is a standard bed the same as a divan?
No. A divan is a fabric-covered base that the mattress sits on, usually with a separate headboard bolted to it. A standard bed frame has visible sides, legs and a headboard as part of the frame, with the mattress resting on slats.
Should I choose a standard bed or an ottoman bed?
It comes down to whether you need the space under the bed. An ottoman gives you the full footprint as storage; a standard frame gives you a simpler bed with nothing to wear out and a slimmer external width. If the room has enough storage elsewhere, there is no reason to pay for the mechanism.
Do standard bed frames need a centre support?
From king size upwards, yes — a centre rail with its own legs to the floor. At 5ft and 6ft the slats span far enough that its absence is the usual reason a frame starts to creak or sag. At single and double it is less critical but still worth having.
