Rectangular Rugs — Rectangle Rug Sizes Guide
Read moreMost rugs are rectangular, because most rooms and most furniture are. A rectangle follows the line of a sofa, a bed or a dining table, and getting the size right does more for a room than the design.

Standard rectangle rug sizes
Sizes vary from design to design, but most rectangular rugs here fall into these sizes. Check the options on each product page.
- 80 x 150cm: a small rectangle rug for beside a bed, in front of a fireplace or at a door.
- 120 x 170cm or 120 x 180cm: under a coffee table, or in a small bedroom or study.
- 133 x 195cm or 140 x 200cm: a small living room with a 2 seater sofa, or beside a single bed.
- 160 x 230cm: one of the most versatile sizes, for a living room with a 2 or 3 seater, or laid across a double bed.
- 200 x 290cm: a large rug for a 3 seater and chairs, a double or king size bed, or a four-seater dining table.
- 240 x 340cm and 300 x 390cm: large rectangular rugs for a corner sofa, an open-plan room or a six-seater dining table.
What size rug for a sofa?
The front legs of the sofa and chairs should sit on the rug, and the rug should be at least as wide as the sofa, ideally a little wider:
- 2 seater sofa (about 140–180cm wide): 160 x 230cm.
- 3 seater sofa (about 190–230cm wide): 200 x 290cm, laid lengthways in front of it.
- Corner sofa or large seating group: 240 x 340cm or bigger.
What size rug for a bed?
The rug should reach about 50–60cm beyond each side of the bed. Lay it across the bed, under the lower two-thirds. A double bed is 135cm wide and a king size 150cm, so a 200 x 290cm rug gives about 70–75cm on each side; a 160 x 230cm rug across a double gives about 45cm.
What size rug for a dining table?
Allow about 60–70cm beyond the edge of the table on every side, so the chairs stay on the rug when they are pulled out. A four-seater table of about 80 x 140cm needs a rug of around 200 x 290cm; a six-seater of about 90 x 180cm needs around 240 x 340cm.
Check the size before you buy
Mark the rug's outline on the floor with masking tape and live with it for a day. It shows how much floor stays visible, whether doors clear the rug and where the furniture legs fall.
Rectangular rug FAQs
What is the most common rug size?
160 x 230cm is one of the most common sizes: it suits most living rooms and fits across a double bed.
What size rug for a 3 seater sofa?
Usually 200 x 290cm, so the front legs of the sofa and the chairs opposite can sit on it.
Should I choose a small or large rectangular rug?
If in doubt, go larger. A rug that is too small makes a room look disjointed; one that runs under the furniture pulls it together.
