An extra large rug is bought for a room that a normal rug makes look worse. Past a certain floor area, a standard size stops anchoring the furniture and starts floating in the middle of it, and no amount of arranging fixes that.

These run to around 300 x 400cm and more — roughly the floor area of a small bedroom, laid down in one piece.

How big an extra large rug is

Sizes vary a little between ranges, but the sizes people look for here are around 300cm by 400cm, sometimes the other way round.

That is a different order of thing from a standard living room rug. A 200 x 300cm rug sits under a seating group; a rug at this size covers the seating group and the walking space around it, and in a lot of rooms it comes close to being fitted carpet you can take with you.

Which is exactly what makes it worth it in the right room. On a hard floor in a large open-plan space, an extra large rug does what nothing else does: it draws a boundary around the sitting area and stops the room reading as one undifferentiated floor.

Extra large rugs for a living room

The living room is where nearly all of these end up, and the test is simple: can every piece of seating stand fully on the rug with floor still showing around the outside?

If it can, the room reads as designed. That is the arrangement that a standard rug in a large room cannot achieve, and it is the reason to go up a size rather than save the money.

In an open-plan room the job is different again. The rug is not filling a floor, it is marking out where the sitting area ends and the dining or kitchen end begins. Here, the rug wants to be big enough that nobody's chair is half on and half off it, and a gap of clear floor between the rug and any wall keeps the two zones legible.

Huge rugs in black, white and grey

At this size, colour behaves differently from anything smaller. The rug stops being an object in the room and becomes most of the floor, so it functions more like a wall colour than like a piece of furniture.

That is an argument for restraint. Black, charcoal and deep grey ground a big space and hide traffic, and they are the ones asked for most at this size. Cream and white do the opposite and open a room up, though at 12 square metres they are a commitment to keeping it clean.

Strong colours and busy patterns are the ones to be careful with. A green rug at 160 x 230cm is a nice touch; the same green across a whole floor is the room's dominant decision.

Laying an extra large rug

Two practical things that only matter at this size.

You cannot lay it around the furniture. A rug this big has to go down first and the furniture on top of it, which means clearing the room rather than sliding a rug into place. Plan for that.

And it will hold its roll for longer than a small rug. Give it a few days flat, weighted at the corners if it needs it, before deciding whether the creases are going to settle. They usually do.

The size also comes in polypropylene for outdoors, and a patio is one of the few places that genuinely needs it: an outdoor space has no walls to give a rug a boundary, so a small one on a big patio looks stranded in a way it never does indoors.
