Living Room Rugs — Large Rugs for the Lounge
Read moreA living room rug does three jobs: it defines the seating area, it softens the floor where you sit and walk most, and it brings colour or pattern into the room. Choose the size first, then the material, then the design.
See all rugs, extra large rugs, round rugs, grey rugs and beige rugs, or shaggy and fluffy rugs for a softer feel.
What size rug for a living room?
The rug should be big enough for at least the front legs of the sofa and armchairs to sit on it. That ties the seating together and stops the rug looking like an island in the middle of the floor. Leave a margin of bare floor between the rug and the walls.
Rug size for a 3 seater sofa
A 3 seater is usually around 190–230cm wide, so a 200 x 290cm rug laid lengthways in front of it lets the front legs of the sofa and the chairs opposite rest on the rug. With a 2 seater and an armchair in a smaller room, 160 x 230cm is often enough.
Large rugs for a corner sofa or open-plan room
A corner sofa or a big seating group needs a large rug of 240 x 340cm or more. In an open-plan room, the rug marks out the living area from the dining or kitchen space.
Where to place a living room rug
Centre the rug on the coffee table or the sofa, not on the room. With all the furniture on the rug, the effect is generous and formal; with only the front legs on, it is more relaxed and needs a smaller size. A round rug under a coffee table or in a reading corner softens a room of straight lines.
Choosing a material for the living room
Wool is warm, springy and hard-wearing. Heat-set polypropylene, used across much of the range, copes well with children and pets and is easy to clean. Viscose brings a silky sheen but is better in a quieter room, because it can mark if it gets wet.
Neutral or patterned living room rugs?
A neutral rug in beige, cream or grey suits almost any sofa and lets you change cushions and throws through the year. A patterned rug, whether traditional, distressed vintage or geometric, hides everyday marks better and gives a plain sofa something to sit against. If the sofa is patterned, keep the rug calmer.
Living room rug FAQs
What size rug should go under a sofa?
One big enough for the sofa's front legs to rest on it. For a 3 seater that is usually 200 x 290cm.
Should a living room rug be wider than the sofa?
Ideally yes, at least as wide as the sofa and a little wider, so it frames the seating.
What is the best rug for a family living room?
A patterned or mid-toned polypropylene rug: it is hard-wearing, easy to clean and hides marks between cleans.
