Wooden Chairs — Oak, Walnut & Solid Wood Dining Chairs

A wooden chair is the one that lasts. It takes knocks, it can be repaired, and it looks better for being used. Most of the wooden chairs here are dining chairs, in oak, walnut and washed timber finishes, some with a solid seat and some with an upholstered one.

Below you'll find how to match wood to your table, when to choose a padded seat, and how to look after the finish. Browse all dining chairs or the rest of our chairs.

Matching wooden chairs to your table

You don't have to match exactly. Two woods that are almost the same shade can look like a mistake, while a clear contrast looks deliberate: walnut chairs against a light oak table, or pale oak chairs around a dark top. If you want them to match, choose chairs from the same range as the table, where the finish is made to sit together.

Seat height

Allow about 30cm between the top of the seat and the underside of the table top. That leaves room for your legs and keeps the table at a comfortable height for eating.

Solid seat or upholstered seat?

A solid wooden seat is the easiest to keep clean, which matters in a kitchen or with children at the table. An upholstered seat in linen or fabric is more comfortable for long meals and softens the look of a wooden room. A solid seat with a cushion gives you both.

Oak, walnut and washed timber

Oak chairs

Oak is hard-wearing with a visible grain, and suits both traditional and Scandinavian rooms. Smoked and natural oak finishes change the tone without hiding the grain.

Walnut chairs

Walnut is darker and richer, and works well against pale floors and walls.

Timber wash finishes

A washed finish gives a pale, relaxed, slightly rustic look that suits a country kitchen or a coastal scheme.

Looking after wooden chairs

Wipe spills straight away with a damp cloth and dry the wood afterwards. Keep chairs away from radiators and strong direct sun, which can dry and fade the timber, and check the joints occasionally on chairs that are used every day.

Delivery

Our furniture is delivered in 2 to 3 weeks unless the product page says otherwise. Our own team delivers across Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland and brings it into the room you choose, not just to the door. Assembly is optional, with the cost shown on each product.

Wooden chair FAQs

Do wooden dining chairs have to match the table?

No. A clear contrast, such as dark chairs around a light table, often looks better than a near match. Choose the same range if you want an exact match.

Are wooden chairs comfortable for long meals?

A shaped seat helps, and an upholstered seat or a cushion makes a solid wooden chair comfortable for longer sittings.

What height should a dining chair be?

Leave about 30cm between the seat and the underside of the table top.
