White Rugs in Ivory and Off White

There is no bright white rug here, and there is a reason for that. A true white on a floor reads as cold and shows the first mark, and almost everyone asking for a white rug is picturing something warmer than that.

Ivory rugs

Ivory is white with a little yellow in it, and it is the shade most people mean when they say they want a white rug.

Against warm walls, a wooden floor, brass or natural fabric, a true white sets itself apart from everything and reads as clinical. Ivory does not — it sits with all of them, and the contrast against a pale wall is soft rather than stark.

It also hides more. On a bright white there is nowhere for a mark to go, so the first one shows. Ivory has enough tone in it to absorb the ordinary greying any pale rug picks up over a year.

Off white rugs

Off white is the cooler of the two, closer to a true white but with the hardness taken out.

It is the better choice in a room that is already warm — a room with a lot of oak, or walls in a warm cream. There, ivory can disappear into the scheme, and off white gives the floor enough separation to read as its own thing.

Between the two, hold the rug against the wall rather than against paper. Whichever one does not look either yellow or grey against that wall is the one.

Where a pale rug works

Pale rugs do something no other colour does: they make the floor recede. In a small or dark room that reads as more space, and nothing in a stronger colour comes close.

The rooms where they survive are the ones with no shoes and little traffic. A bedroom, particularly beside a bed rather than under it. A spare room. A study. A sitting room in a house where shoes come off at the door.

The rooms where they struggle are hallways, kitchens and any living room a family crosses in outdoor shoes. It is not that the rug fails — it is that a grey rug that has aged looks fine and a pale one that has aged looks neglected.

There is one exception that changes the whole calculation: a washable pale rug goes in the machine. That removes the only real objection to the colour, and it is worth looking at if you want ivory in a room that gets used.

White and black rugs

A pale rug with black in it is a different product from a plain one, and considerably more practical.
