A little planning saves a lot of frustration halfway through the job.
How Much Wallpaper to Buy
A standard UK wallpaper roll is 10.05m long and 53cm wide. To work out roughly how many you need, measure the height and width of the walls you're papering, check the pattern repeat on the roll (a large repeat means more waste, so fewer usable drops per roll), and calculate from there. Then — and this is the important bit — buy one extra roll. Colours can vary slightly between print batches, so running short halfway through and having to reorder is the mistake you really want to avoid.
Paste-the-Wall or Paste-the-Paper
Modern non-woven wallpapers are usually "paste-the-wall", meaning you apply the paste directly to the wall and hang the paper dry. It's faster, easier and far more forgiving, which makes it ideal if you're doing it yourself for the first time. Traditional wallpapers are "paste-the-paper", where the paste goes onto the back of the paper, which then needs to soak before hanging. Always check which type you're buying, and use the paste recommended for it.
Complete the Look
Once your walls are done, tie the room together with coordinating soft furnishings, a rug that picks up the colours, and furniture that suits the new scheme. Do you deliver wallpaper and paint?
We deliver wallpaper right across the UK. Paint is available for delivery throughout Northern Ireland, and you're also very welcome to collect it from our Enniskillen showroom. If you're unsure whether we can deliver to you, just get in touch and we'll let you know.
How many rolls of wallpaper do I need?
Measure the height and width of the walls you're papering, then check the pattern repeat of your chosen design, as this affects how many usable lengths you'll get from each roll. A standard UK roll is 10.05m long and 53cm wide. Whatever number you arrive at, buy at least one extra roll. Colours can vary slightly between print batches, so if you run out and reorder later, the new roll may not match perfectly.
What's the difference between paste-the-wall and paste-the-paper wallpaper?
With paste-the-wall wallpaper, you apply the adhesive directly to the wall and hang the paper dry. It's quicker, cleaner and much easier for a first-time decorator, and most modern non-woven wallpapers work this way. With paste-the-paper, the adhesive goes onto the back of the paper, which then needs to be folded and left to soak before you hang it. Always check which type your wallpaper is and use the paste recommended by the manufacturer.

Do I need to prepare the wall before wallpapering?
Yes — preparation is what separates a good finish from a poor one. The wall should be clean, dry and smooth, with any old wallpaper removed, flaking paint dealt with, and holes or cracks filled. New plaster and other absorbent surfaces need sealing or sizing first, otherwise they'll draw the moisture out of the paste. If you're unsure what your wall needs, bring us a photo and we'll talk you through it.
Why should I check the batch number on wallpaper rolls?
Wallpaper is printed in batches, and the colour can vary very slightly from one batch to another — enough to notice once it's on the wall side by side. Always check that all your rolls come from the same batch number, and buy them all at once. It's also why we recommend buying a spare roll: if you need to patch or repair later, a roll from a different batch may not be an exact match.
Can I see the wallpaper and paint colours in person?
Yes, and with colour we'd really encourage it. Screens never show a colour accurately, and paint in particular looks completely different depending on the light in your room. You're very welcome to come into our Enniskillen showroom to browse the wallpaper books, look at paint colours properly and talk through your project with our team. It's the best way to be confident in your choice before you commit.
