Soft Furnishings — Cushions, Throws & Curtains

Cushions, throws and curtains are the only things in a room you can change without moving any furniture. They cost a fraction of what a sofa costs and they do more to how a room feels than anything else you can buy.

We are a family furniture business, trading since 1981. Everything below is a route into one of the three.

Cushions

The fastest change you can make, and the one most people buy on impulse. Cushions bring colour to a plain sofa or pattern to a plain room, and they are cheap enough to change your mind about.

All of ours come from Scatter Box, filled and ready to use, in small and large squares, rectangles and long cushions for the head of a bed.

Throws

A throw finishes a sofa and is the thing you actually pull over yourself in the evening. Faux fur and chunky knit for winter warmth, waffle and cotton for the rest of the year.

They also cover what needs covering. A throw over a worn arm or a sun-faded seat buys a sofa a few more years, which no cushion will do.

Curtains

Curtains are the largest expanse of fabric in a room and the only soft furnishing that has a job to do beyond looking right: keeping heat in and light out.

Ours are ready made on an eyelet heading, in seven widths and drops, lined, interlined or blackout. Made to measure is available from the Enniskillen showroom rather than online.

Scatter Box cushions and throws

Every cushion and throw here is from Scatter Box, a family business in Navan, County Meath, making soft furnishings since 1959.

They design their own prints rather than buying artwork in, starting from original hand-painted and drawn designs, and much of the range is made up at their own factory. That matters in one practical way: because the cushions and the throws come from the same maker and the same ranges, a cushion and a throw in the same design are the same colour rather than nearly the same. Matching two pieces bought from two different places is how a sofa ends up looking slightly off.

Putting the three together

The three work as a set, and the order to buy them in is usually curtains first.

Curtains are the biggest commitment and the hardest to change, so let them settle the palette. Cushions come next and are where the pattern goes if the curtains are plain, or where it stops if the curtains are patterned. The throw comes last, and it is the one place to be braver than feels comfortable, because it is also the cheapest to replace.

Seeing two of them together is the part a screen cannot do. Our Enniskillen showroom has cushions, throws and curtain fabrics out in the same daylight, which is the only way to know whether a green cushion and a green curtain are the same green.

Soft furnishings FAQs

Do the cushions come filled?

Yes. Every cushion is filled and ready to use, and we do not sell covers on their own.

Do the cushions and throws match?

Where they come from the same Scatter Box range, exactly rather than approximately. That is the advantage of both coming from one maker.

What is Scatter Box?

An Irish soft furnishings brand based in Navan, County Meath, making cushions, throws and curtains since 1959. They design their own prints from original hand-painted artwork, and much of the range is made at their own factory.

Do you do bespoke curtains?

From our Enniskillen showroom, yes. Online we sell ready made curtains only, because bespoke needs the window measured and the fabric seen in the room it is going into.

Where do I start when redoing a room?

With the curtains. They are the largest area of fabric and the hardest to change later, so let them set the colours and choose the cushions and throw to follow.

Can I see them in person before I buy?

Yes, in our Enniskillen showroom. Not everything is out, but there is enough to compare colours and textures side by side in real daylight.
