The double is the most common mattress size in the UK and Ireland. It suits a single adult who likes room to spread out, or a couple in a standard bedroom. With the size fixed, the choice comes down to construction and firmness.

Double mattress size
A standard double mattress is 4ft6, or 135 x 190cm. Measure inside your bed frame before ordering, as European and American doubles are different sizes. For two adults, a king size gives an extra 15cm of width and 10cm of length if the room and bed allow.
Pocket sprung double mattress

Firm or soft double mattress?
Side sleepers often prefer softer or medium; back and front sleepers often prefer medium to firm. If you and your partner differ, pocket springs cope best with two different weights.
Looking after a double mattress
Rotate the mattress head to foot every few months so it wears evenly, and use a mattress protector to keep it clean. A double-sided mattress can also be turned over; a one-sided or pillow top mattress should only be rotated. A new mattress can smell of its fillings for a few days, so let it air with the bedding off.
