Doormats & Draught Excluders: Coir, Jute and Double Mats
Read moreA good doormat is the first thing guests step on and the last line of defence against mud and rain coming into the house. This collection brings together coir doormats in patterned and plain designs, a braided jute doormat and a plaited mat, alongside draught excluders that sit at the foot of a door to help keep a room cosy through the colder months.
Once the hall is sorted, take a look at our rugs for the rest of the house, or at soft furnishings for cushions, throws and more.
Choosing a doormat
Measure your doorway
Measure the width of the door frame and the space in front of it before choosing. A standard mat suits most single front and back doors, while double doormats, such as the Ikat Coir Double Doormat, the Ikat Arch Double Doormat, the Elegant Coir Double Doormat and the Star Coir Double Doormat, are a better fit for wider entrances, French doors and porches. Leave enough clearance for the door to open over the mat.
Coir, jute and pattern
Coir is a coarse natural fibre that is good at scraping dirt from shoes, which is why it is a popular choice for outside doors. Jute, as in the Kanha Jute Braided Doormat, generally has a softer feel. Designs range from Ikat patterns in ochre, navy and black with natural, to arches in teal and navy, stars, a leaf border and a classic Welcome mat. Darker colours and busier patterns are better at hiding everyday dirt.
Using a draught excluder
A draught excluder lies along the bottom of a door to block the gap underneath. Measure the width of the door so it covers the full gap. The Cardinham Stitched Draught Excluder in ecru and the Boho Embellished Draught Excluder add a decorative finish while doing a practical job.
Care
Shake or brush natural-fibre mats regularly and let them dry fully if they get wet.
